The Urban Commons Cookbook is two steps closer to reality

Happy new year everyone! We’re excited to announce two big steps forward in the Urban Commons Cookbook.

Our graphic designer, Luisa Le Van, delivered the first fully typeset version of the Urban Commons Cookbook just before Christmas. Our first task in 2020 was to go through it.

This is the first pass of two – in this one, Nils, Nicole and I are looking at text spacing, layout and graphic style. The text is pretty complex, with side notes in the margins, info boxes with extra information, sources, cross-references, and a large number of checklists and methods.

As you can see, Luisa has done a great job with this challenging task! We will meet to discuss changes to the layout today, which means the final proof should be ready for the second and final pass – proofreading for spelling, punctuation, etc. – in mid- to late January.

Secondly, we have also decided on a publishing option. Like our colleagues at Shareable, we have decided to release our book through the self-publishing platform IngramSpark, which has publishing facilities in the US, UK, Europe and Australia. The books will be printed on demand at the facility closest to the purchaser, saving both money and resources. And through print on demand, only the number of books will be created that’s really wanted, reducing waste and storage costs.

We’re excited to have the finish line in view. Once we’ve checked the corrected files, we can order the physical proofs and finally start planning the release party. 🙂 Now that’s what I call a good start to the year!
